UAF's first art piece

Our History

Over the past year UAF has devoted itself to the preparation and renovation of our workspace, which we call the Barn. It is a large space in Potrero Hill that includes a 1,500 square foot rehearsal studio and performance area, construction shop, and artist's studios. Outfitted with significant audio and video equipment, the Barn provides a base for us to work in and from as we fulfill our goals. With it now operational, the time has come for us to begin growing art to bring to the community.

UAF'S recent art pieceOur Future

We have ambitious plans for UAF. Ultimately we plan to grow ongoing projects under UAF, such as a small dance company. Because of the decidedly collaborative nature of our artistic pursuits, we envision UAF becoming an organization larger than itself where artists from within and beyond the bay area will come to explore their mediums. We will not have a single artistic director but will instead rotate directorship from project to project in order to prevent the art we produce from becoming inbred and unchallenged by external stimuli. In so doing, we hope to train leaders to go out and develop projects elsewhere. In line with this purpose, we do not see UAF as an organization to serve the bay area exclusively. It is our intention, upon establishing this bay area branch, to plant spaces like the Barn in other locations domestically and internationally. In this way we plan to make UAF a network in which artists can move freely as they seek new ways to develop their artistry and impact the broadest possible populace.
